Steel Roof Deck Installation Guidelines

The installation of steel roof decks, including those produced by the 1.5″ A Narrow Rib Roof Deck Roll Forming Machine, must be carried out by skilled and experienced professionals. Before manufacturing the materials, detailed roof deck installation plans must be submitted for review and approval by the project architect and engineer.

All steel roof decks, such as those made using the 1.5″ A Narrow Rib Roof Deck Roll Forming Machine, must be installed according to the approved drawings. End laps should have a standard overlap of 2 inches and must be positioned directly over structural supports. Each deck panel should be placed on the supporting framework, carefully aligned, and adjusted so that side laps and end overlaps align accurately on the supporting members. When positioning on joist framing, ensure end laps are placed over a top chord angle for secure anchorage.

After completing one row of decking, begin the next row, making any alignment corrections as necessary. Panels must be placed and adjusted securely on the supporting steel framework. Cutting of deck openings and skewed cuts must be completed on-site. Openings not depicted in the drawings—such as those for stacks, conduits, plumbing, or vents—should be cut and reinforced as needed by the trades responsible for them.

Attachment Procedures

Roof deck sheets must be secured immediately after placement. By the end of each workday, all installed sheets must be fastened. Arc welding is commonly used to attach the ZTRFM Steel Roof Deck to structural supports. Welders should follow closely behind the installation crew.

Welds must penetrate all layers of material and securely attach to the structural supports. Welding electrodes must be selected with care to prevent high amperage blowholes and ensure reliable attachment. Puddle welds should measure a minimum of 5/8 inch in diameter, or elongated puddle welds with an equivalent perimeter may be used. If fillet welds are applied, they must be at least 1 inch in length.

Roof deck ends should be welded to supports at intervals not exceeding 12 inches on center, while intermediate supports should be welded at a maximum spacing of 18 inches on center. Alternative mechanical fastening systems, such as power-activated or pneumatically driven fasteners and screws, may be used if reviewed and approved by the project designer.

For spans longer than 5 feet, side laps should be fastened together at intervals not exceeding 36 inches on center. The method and frequency of attachment must align with the overall building design, as specified by the project designer. The 1.5″ A Narrow Rib Roof Deck Roll Forming Machine is designed to ensure precise and efficient manufacturing of these components, contributing to secure installation processes.

1.5″ A Narrow Rib Roof Deck Roll Forming Machine

Steel decks, particularly those produced using the 1.5″ A Narrow Rib Roof Deck Roll Forming Machine, must be protected from damage, corrosion, and deformation during storage, handling, and installation. If not installed promptly, bundles should be stored off the ground with one end raised to facilitate drainage. Waterproof coverings with proper ventilation should be used to prevent condensation.

Bundles should be stacked securely to avoid shifting or damage. Tightness of the bundles should be regularly checked and adjusted as needed. On the building frame, deck bundles should be placed near a main supporting beam, column, or wall. Under no circumstances should bundles be placed on unbolted frames or unsecured and unbridged joists. The structural frame must be adequately braced before receiving any bundles.

By utilizing advanced equipment such as the 1.5″ A Narrow Rib Roof Deck Roll Forming Machine, the production and installation of high-quality steel roof decks can be achieved with enhanced efficiency and precision, ensuring the durability and stability of the roofing system throughout its lifecycle.
